A truly iconic garlic variety that anybody who enjoys long walks in the countryside will recognise instantly. Wild garlic is often smelt before it’s seen and can be found in shady woodland areas during the springtime. Now is your chance to grow you own perhaps in a shady spot in your garden. These perennial, clump forming plants will give you a crop of thick, garlic flavoured leaves every spring.
As Wild Garlic’s natural habitat is shady woodlands, it grows very well in shaded areas of your garden. If you’re struggling to find something to fill that gap then look no further. The leaves can be added sparingly to salads or used in sauces and stir- fries to add delicious garlic flavours. Alternatively make your own pesto! This wild garlic will happily naturalise if left to its own devices. Growing to a height of 31–40cm (12–16”), there will be plenty of garlic flavoured leaves to go around.
Sow your wild garlic seeds straight into damp soil in a shady location. Ensure that the soil is weed free before sowing. Simply take the leaves as and when they are needed once the plants are mature.
Seeds should be sown directly onto damp, weed-free soil in a shady location from October–March, where they are to crop. Gently rake to lightly cover. Keep moist at all times. Alternatively, start seeds in small pots in a cold frame and plant out when large enough to handle.
