The Tomato Cherokee Purple is a fantastic beefsteak variety that is widely known as one of the sweetest beefsteak tomatoes you can buy or grow. With a unique, almost pumpkin style aesthetic, complemented by deep reddish/ pink colour, these tomatoes look just as good as they taste. Keeping a slightly greener colour nearer the stem when they are ready to eat as a great way to indicate they’re ready.
The Tomato Cherokee Purple earns its namesake from tales of Cherokee tribes. It is said that the seeds have been passed down generation to generation by Cherokee tribes that originated in Tennessee, USA. The large, 12oz tomatoes maintain their dusky reddish/ pink colour inside and out, creating a very powerful dash of colour to your salads and dishes. The Tomato Cherokee Purple is a cordon variety that is ready to harvest late July–October. The plant grows to a height of 151–200cm; spread 41–50cm.
Sow February–April in a propagator on a windowsill or pots or trays in a greenhouse at 18–21ºC using a good quality compost. Cover seeds with 6mm compost (germination 7–14 days). Transplant seedlings singly into 7.5cm (3") pots. Grow on, finally planting into large pots, or direct into a greenhouse border; 45cm (18") apart when the risk of frost has passed. Support with a cane and remove side shoots regularly. Feed regularly with tomato food.
