The Carolina Reaper was rightly voted the Worlds’ Hottest Chilli by the Guinness Book of Records! Bred in South Carolina by crossing a Ghost chilli with a Habanero, this chilli pepper weighs in at an incredible 2.2 million on the Scoville Scale. This devilish chilli pepper plant should be handled with extra care and is not for the faint-hearted!
Each devilishly hot chilli pepper has a fruity, cinnamon/chocolate taste before the mind-blowing heat kicks in. The bumpy, lumpy Carolina Reaper won't all look the same as they grow, but the majority will have a pointed scorpion tail that is typical of this 'super-hot' chilli. Treat this plant with respect, pick your chillies once they turn red, and always wear gloves when handling fruit. Never touch your eyes without washing your hands… You have been warned! Harvest late August-October. Height 61-70cm (24-28"); spread 61-70cm (24-128").
Carolina Reaper seeds are included in the Rob Smith Heritage Range that is dedicated to his love for gardening and allotment growing. So why not try this popular chilli variety that is proving very popular, a must-have for any keen chilli enthusiast.
Your chilli pepper plant will perform best in a greenhouse but will produce a good crop in a sunny sheltered location outdoors. Stand the plant in a warm, light, airy place such as a greenhouse, windowsill or conservatory and allow it to grow, ensuring that the compost is kept moist.
Using a good quality, moist seed compost, sow your seeds in a propagator and cover with 6mm (¼") compost. Place on a windowsill or in a greenhouse at approximately 21-24°C (70-75°F) to germinate, usually 7-14 days. Transfer seedlings into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow on. Once they are 15cm (6") tall, transfer to 25cm (10") pots of John Innes No.3 and keep on a warm, sunny windowsill or greenhouse (once warm enough).
