A heritage variety that goes back centuries, this fruit has a sweet flavour that we can’t get enough of. Well suited to cooler climates, this melon grows well indoors and in containers. Harvest August-mid October. Height 50-60cm (20-24"); spread 100-150cm (39-59").
Originally grown in the garden of the Bishop of Rennes in France over 400 years ago. This early maturing 'charentais' style melon is well suited to growing in our cooler climate but is best grown in a greenhouse, up netting or canes.
'Petis gris', translating as 'a little grey' refers to the green/grey colour of the fruit before they ripen to a mustard/olive colour. Best picked when the blossom end is soft, the melon has half changed colour and the fruit is fragrant. Sow April - May. Harvest August-Mid October.
GROWING - Sow in a propagator on a windowsill or in a greenhouse at approximately 15-20ºC (60-68ºF) placing the seed on its edge and covering with 13mm (½") of compost. Transfer when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3") pots, grow on and finally plant into the greenhouse border, grow bags or large pots, when risk of frost has passed. Restrict growth by pinching out shoots after they have formed 5 leaves. Water and feed regularly. Pollinate by inserting a male flower into female flower (the female flower has a swelling at the base).
