Next year’s going to be all about ornamental edibles, and Quattro F1 has it all. Twice as big as other chives, this variety produces tender edible flat leaves and flowers. Perfect for the patio or the garden, the odourless flowers will last up to 3 weeks in a vase. Flowers June – October. Ht 81 – 90cm. Flowers June-October. Height 80-90cm (31-35"); spread 20-30cm (8-12").
Rob says “I love alliums in the garden, with their purple globular flowers towering over lush, green foliage; they are true bee magnets. 'Quattro' is a beautiful allium, but the best part about this plant is that it's edible!”
Tasting of onion with a hint of garlic, they are like super-charged chives with tender, flat leaves (just like a daffodil) which are perfect to use like a chive or spring onion. Not only are the leaves edible, so are the stalks and flowers which look amazing in salads. Alternatively, flowers can be used cut in a vase and will stay fresh for over 2 weeks.
FACT: Plants will grow around 15cm tall in the first year and are best used sparingly, allowing the plants to grow larger and over winter. From the second year the plants will get to 30cm tall and the flowers will reach 90cm. Fresh leaves are produced until the first frosts.
Sow 3 seeds per cell/module on a windowsill or in a propagator. When large enough to handle, transfer to a small pot and grow on until after the last frost. Plant out where required. They will develop into strong plants by summer of the following year and will thrive for many years, just like regular, smaller chives.
