The Stokkievitsboon is a great French bean variety. Stokkievitsboon translates to ‘Pole Lapwing Bean’, this is because of the climbing habit of the plant and the pink speckled beans which resemble eggs of the lapwing bird. The Climbing French Bean (Drying) ‘Stokkievitsboon’ produces very attractive beans with a beautiful speckled pattern that will certainly add to the aesthetic of any meal they are added to.
It isn’t just the beans that are speckled, the pods are a spectacular pink speckled colour that will most definitely stand out in your vegetable garden. Contrasting beautifully with rich green foliage, the pods of the Stokkievitsboon pods will create very colourful displays until they are ready to be picked. The beans can be eaten fresh straight out of the pod when they are young. Alternatively dry the beans out and use them in soups and stews! The French beans will be ready to harvest late June–early October. The Climbing French Bean (Drying) ‘Stokkievitsboon’ will grow to a height of 151–200cm and a spread of 31–40cm.
Sow Indoors April and May and directly into warm soil from mid May to June. Sow at a depth of 3–4cm (1½") and 10cm (4") apart, allowing 45cm (18") between rows. Germination temperatures 18-22°C. Dig the soil in the autumn and incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure, lime in late winter if the soil is acidic. Rake in a general-purpose fertiliser 2 weeks before sowing or planting. Support plants with canes or a bean frame.
