A chilli lovers dream, the very versatile Chilli Pepper De Cayenne is used for making many different products from the famously hot Cayenne chilli powder to chilli oil. The word Cayenne originates from the city of Cayenne in French Guiana made famous for producing some of the hottest chilli peppers known to the world!
After growing them from seed, once the plant has established, the fruit produced is thin and fiery red. Roughly 5–10cm long, these Cayenne chillies add a fairly substantial kick of heat and a huge boost of flavour to any dish they’re added to. Use them fresh for cooking or dry them out and use them for seasoning. The Chilli Pepper De Cayenne can be harvested green or red – the redder the pepper, the hotter it will taste. Measuring between 30,000–50,000 Scoville (SHU) this chilli pepper isn’t the hottest but you will most definitely feel the heat from this variety. The established plants grow to between 45–60cm in height and look amazing growing in large containers in the sunshine.
Sow in a propagator or heated greenhouse at 21–24°C to germinate. Use a quality, moist seed compost and cover the seed with 6mm (¼") of compost or vermiculite. Germination takes 7–21 days. Transfer seedlings to 9cm (3") pots and grow on. Performs well in a large pot in a greenhouse or tunnel or a sheltered sunny patio. Feed regularly with a high potash fertiliser. Pick fruit when ripe.
