In cities there may be little or no open ground and on allotments the soil may be full of heavy clay, waterlogged or simply too overgrown to garden on, all of which take time to cultivate. There is one golden rule for raised beds, and that’s the importance of the soil. Don’t skimp on quality soil to fill your raised beds, and feeding the soil regularly is important, as the nutrients will need replacing eventually. A good compost or green manure crop once a year will maintain your soil structure.
