Why shop with The Organic Gardening Catalogue

Why Organic Gardening?

We believe that the best option to protect our food supplies, environment, health and wellbeing is to use organic growing methods. These harness the natural cycles and processes that promote plant growth. Your garden is your own little patch of the world to look after. Most gardens are quite small, but there are 15 million of them in the UK. Imagine the improvement to the environment if all of these gardens were cared for organically, and how much better it would be for our families, plants and wildlife.

Organic growing doesn’t just mean throwing away the chemical weed killers and pesticide sprays. It is more exciting, challenging and satisfying. It is using natural ways to promote a healthy, productive and sustainable growing environment. It involves feeding the soil, encouraging wildlife, and getting creative with nature’s pest and disease controls. It’s not expensive, it’s practical – and it’s good for plants, people and communities. You don’t need a large space to grow organically, and it doesn’t have to be untidy! If you don’t have a garden or an allotment, then a window box or pots on your balcony or patio can in their own way be as productive. And if you mix your planting you can enhance your fruit and vegetables with beautiful flowers, enjoy the wildlife and have a succession of fresh produce.

The Organic Gardening Catalogue is a trusted source of seeds and supplies.

Going Peat Free

95% of the UK’s peat bogs have been degraded or lost over the years with peat bog mass being extracted 60 times faster than it's laid down. This results in lost ecosystems - including wild areas that are home to plants, birds and insects - and increases carbon emissions. Because of this, we have worked really hard to ensure all the plants for sale have been grown in peat free compost consisting of a mix of coco pith, wood ?bres and wood bark. The plug plants will include a trace of natural lime and organically approved nitrogen fertiliser.

A comprehensive collection of herb seeds for culinary, medicinal and decorative use.

Flowers and Wild Flowers

A wide range of varieties for beautiful displays and borders, for cutting, drying and to attract beneficial pollinators are on offer. Flowers form an important part of a balanced organic garden.

Sprouting Seeds

Our Range at The Organic Gardening Catalogue

Our range

Our seed range consists of both organic and non-organic seeds, defined as follows:

Organic seeds

Seeds produced from plants grown to recognised organic standards. No chemicals are used either before or after harvest. All organic seeds in the catalogue are clearly marked with the "Organic" logo.

Coated organic seeds

A few varieties that are used extensively by commercial growers are supplied to us with a chalky white coating on them to aid visibility against the soil or compost. It is organically certified and leaves no harmful residue.

Non-organic seeds

Seeds produced from plants grown by non-organic growers. No chemical treatments have been used or applied after harvest. Other seed suppliers may sell seed which has been given a coating of chemical to combat fungus or disease, but you can be sure that all our seed is supplied in its natural state. Organic gardeners have shown for many years that good results can be achieved without such treatments.

Why aren't all our seeds organic?

Until recently, organically produced seed was very rare and using untreated non-organic seed was the only option for most organic growers. However, since then, the situation has improved. We now have many sources of organic seeds, many of which are available exclusively in the UK through The Organic Gardening Catalogue.

There are still gaps where no organic seed is available, and our aim is to fill these when we can. Until that time we will continue to offer high quality, non-organic seed of varieties that have been shown to perform well in organic gardens, providing our customers with the widest possible choice.
