Traditionally sweet potatoes have been grown from ‘slips’, but we supply Super Plugs, well-rooted and actively growing, which give far better results! Our new generation of cool-weather-tolerant, fast-maturing varieties can now be grown successfully from plants in even the chilliest parts of the UK. Simply pot and grow on in a frost-free environment until June, then either re-pot or plant into a sunny spot in the garden and you’ll be harvesting your very own sweet potatoes this autumn! Packed full of vitamins and iron, they can be boiled, steamed, baked, mashed or chipped - delicious! Collection contains 18 plants over the three varieties:
Beauregard - Good crops of medium sized tubers with sweet, salmon-orange flesh.
Bonita - Tan-skinned tubers with a purple cast, and unbeatably sweet, bright white flesh. Perfect for traditional potato dishes. Not available from supermarkets.
Burgundy - Uniform plants producing well-shaped, red-skinned tubers with sweet, burgundy-orange flesh. Not available from supermarkets.
When the plants are received, they should be planted into 10cm pots and grown on in a warm greenhouse or indoors. Sweet Potatoes are not frost hardy so don't plant outside until the risk of frost has passed. When planting outside, position them 12" apart in a sheltered, sunny position, providing a cane or string support. In the greenhouse they can be planted in the border or in large pots. When using a container, fill with good quality soil-less potting compost placing one or two plants per 30cm (12") pot. The ideal temperature would be approx. 22-25°C (72-77°F).
As the plants develop feed two or three times during the growing season with a high potash liquid tomato fertiliser. Keep the compost moist as dry soils will adversely affect the development of the young tubers.
If grown outdoors the tubers should be lifted in September, before the first frosts, and those grown in the greenhouse can be left and lifted in October.
Once lifted they must be cured to set the skins and to allow the sweet flavour to develop further. To do this place them in trays and keep them in a warm room for a week. After this period they can be stored in a dry, cool, frost free place, checking them regularly for any signs of deterioration.
Although not as large as those available in supermarkets which are generally imported from warmer climes, a useful crop can be achieved in a good summer.

Small items are sent by Royal Mail and larger items by courier. When ordering large items please provide your phone number so that the courier can contact you if necessary.

Packet seed, garlic, onion sets, shallots and mushroom spawn (except windowsill kits) incur a carriage charge of £1.99.
All other products incur a carriage charge of £4.99.
If your order comprises of a combination of carriage charges then the higher carriage charge will be applied.

Orders to the Isle of Wight and Isle of Scilly: For orders weighing less than 2kg the standard charge applies. Where the weight of the order is 2kg and above the carriage charge is £14.99.
Republic of Ireland: For orders weighing less than 2kg the standard charge applies. Where the combined weight of the order is 2kg and above, the carriage contribution is £14.99.
Other EU countries: We can only deliver packet flower and vegetable seed to other EU countries. The delivery charge is £4.99 per order.
