The lettuce ‘Speckled Trout’ is an old Austrian Heritage variety of Cos lettuce. This lettuce is very cold hardy and slow to bolt so can be cropped for longer. Unlike other lettuce, it has unusual and attractive 'splashes' of red on the bright green leaves give rise to the name 'Speckled Trout', as it resembles the skin of the aforementioned fish. Easy to grow this heritage variety will create eye-catching beds and borders. Height 21-30cm (8-12"); spread 21-30cm (8-12").
Harvesting late April - October, it’s one of the sweetest Cos lettuces available, with crisp leaves which are fantastic in a Caesar salad. Adds a 'splash' of colour to salads and sandwiches. Thinnings can also be added to salads or sandwiches or replanted elsewhere in the garden.
The Speckled Trout is included in the Rob Smith Heritage Range that is dedicated to his love for gardening and allotment growing. So why not try a lettuce variety that has stood the test of time, a must-have variety for any keen gardener.
For an early crop, sow in trays or modules in a colder greenhouse from January-March. When large enough to handle, plant into the greenhouse border or pots where they are to crop. Sow March-June outside where they are to crop 30cm between rows, thin to 20-30cm between plants. Keep well watered in hot weather.
