Description

QUICK RETURN COMPOST MAKING - THE ESSENCE OF THE SUSTAINABLE ORGANIC GARDEN by Andrew Davenport

Deep in the heart of the Cotswolds during the 1930's, the remarkable story of Quick Return (QR) compost making began. Using the flowers and leaves of six common herbs and honey as a powerful activator, the QR method produced nutrient-rich compost made from vegetative waste. The remarkable thing was that this compost could be made in a matter of weeks without turning and without the need for manure. Its well-liked and inspired inventor, Maye E. Bruce, was a founder member of the Soil Association and with the help of her determined efforts and informative books, the QR composting system became endeared by many gardeners and farmers in numerous countries for over 40 years.

Aimed at both the novice and expert gardener, the main objective of this book is to pass on the legacy of QR compost making which has almost been forgotten, save for a cult following who are 'in the know'.

"Quick Return Compost Making" explains how the QR method can provide an invaluable way for the gardener and allotment holder to readily make good, fertile compost alleviating the need for the back-breaking job of turning the heap. In particular, for those who do not have manure available (probably most of us) or, to those who prefer not to use manure as a fertiliser such as the vegan gardener, the QR method can provide a compost to feed the soil without compromising the fertility that many of the crops in the organic garden can demand.

Easy to follow, step by step instructions are given for the QR method and scientific theories augment those put forward by Miss Bruce, providing the gardener with the reasoning behind the method. Materials for composting and their preparation are explored in depth together with suitable types of compost bins which have been tried and tested with the QR system. Useful and detailed instructions, accompanied by photographs and sketches, show how to construct appropriate bins in a sustainable manner by re-using materials such as wooden pallets.

Historically, from Miss Bruce's beginnings in Ireland and through two World Wars, the book relates a unique piece of our organic horticultural heritage; following the footsteps of Miss Bruce's successful ventures in various walks of life leading to her development of the QR method and ubiquitous roles in the Soil Association and Organic Movement. Through the extraordinary relationship established between QR and Chase Organics in the 1940's which still exists to the present day, the book relates the origins of the 'Dig for Victory' slogan and the intriguing story of the pioneering organic empire established by Chase Organics in Chertsey, London.

Backed up with accounts from modern day QR compost makers, the book puts forward the many benefits of QR compost making and how it can provide the essential means of nourishment for that most precious and valuable asset; the soil. In doing so the rewards will bring health to those plants we grow, well being to those who feed upon them and a vital contribution towards saving our planet.
