However, many of the self-sown plants we know as weeds will compete for light, water and nutrients.

You can keep weeds down by underplanting your chosen plants, thus reducing their access to bare soil. Mulch mats will also keep weeds away from the base of larger plants. Mulching with an organic material such as green waste compost will make weeds easier to remove, as their roots can’t grip as well. Natural, organic weed killers are available and can be there on standby, and you can back them up by making sure you remove competitive plants whilst they are still young and way before they start to produce seeds. Small weeds can be removed to the compost bin, but deep-rooted pernicious weeds can be added to water to make compost tea or liquid feed. As many weeds support wildlife, it may be an idea to allow for a corridor of plants that seed to develop naturally alongside your growing space.
