Onion sets provide a way of growing onions without needing to start from seed. They are small onions that have been grown to around 1.5-2 cm in diameter, then lifted and dried to stop further growth. Once planted in the soil, they quickly sprout new roots and continue to grow. Sets for September planting producing a crop in June and July before the spring-sown varieties mature.
